Privacy Policy

The short version
Clann is a family app, and your family's data belongs to your family. We collect location and device information only to make features like the family map, arrival alerts, and screen-time controls work.
We do not sell your data, show you ads, or share your information with data brokers or advertising networks. You control what you share, and you can delete your data at any time.
1. Who we are
Clann ("Clann," "we," "us," or "our") is a family location-sharing and parental-controls app for iPhone, operated by Brian Vukmir, an independent app developer based in the United States. This Privacy Policy explains what information the Clann app and its supporting services collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
By creating a Clann family or joining one, you agree to the practices described here. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
2. Information we collect
Clann is a connected service: to share locations between family members and enforce parental controls across devices, some information is processed on our servers. We collect only what the app's features need.
| Category | What it includes | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Your Sign in with Apple identifier and the name/email you choose to share (which may be an Apple private-relay address), your family membership, and your role (for example, parent or child). | To create your account and connect you to your family. |
| Location | Precise device location (including in the background) for members who choose to share, saved places and their geofences, and arrival/departure and location-history events. | To power the family map, presence, and place alerts. |
| Screen Time | For managed child devices: the limits, schedules, and rules a parent configures, plus usage summaries and app-block/"request more time" events. See section 5. | To apply and report on parental controls. |
| Device | Device model, iOS version, app version and build number, a device identifier, and a push-notification (APNs) token. | To deliver notifications and family-control commands to the right device, and to keep the app reliable. |
| Messages | In-app messages and requests between family members (for example, a child's request for more screen time and a parent's reply). | To deliver family communication features. |
| Diagnostics | Reliability and telemetry event logs, and optional diagnostic bundles you or your device may send. These are minimized and stripped of unnecessary personal detail. | To detect and fix problems so location and controls stay dependable. |
We do not collect payment card numbers (any purchases are handled by Apple), and we do not use third-party advertising or analytics SDKs that track you across other apps and websites.
3. How we use information
- To provide the app's core features — the family map, arrival and place alerts, screen-time limits, safe-driving summaries, and family messaging.
- To deliver push notifications you've asked for (such as a child arriving home or a request for more time).
- To keep the service secure, reliable, and working correctly, and to diagnose and fix problems.
- To respond to your support requests.
- To comply with the law, or to protect the safety, rights, or property of our users or the public where we reasonably believe it is necessary.
We do not use your family's information to build advertising profiles, and we do not sell or rent it to anyone.
4. Location data
Location is central to Clann, so we want to be clear about it:
- Sharing is per-person. Each family member controls whether they share their location, and can stop sharing at any time. When a member isn't sharing, their location isn't collected.
- "Always" permission. To show live location and notify your family when someone arrives or leaves a place, iOS requires background ("Always") location access. You grant this in the iOS permission prompt and can change or revoke it anytime in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Clann.
- Who can see it. A member's location is visible only to other members of the same Clann family, according to each person's sharing settings. It is not shared publicly or with anyone outside your family.
- History. Recent location and arrival/departure events are stored so the app can show timelines and presence. You can reduce what's kept by turning off sharing or removing a member.
5. Screen Time & parental controls
Clann's parental controls are built on Apple's Family Controls, Managed Settings, and Device Activity frameworks. A parent or guardian sets up these controls on a child's device with that device's consent through Apple's system prompts.
- Apple keeps the raw data private. Detailed Screen Time information is provided to the app by Apple through opaque, on-device tokens. Chores like "which specific apps" are represented by tokens that are meaningful only on that device — we do not receive a browsable log of everything a child does on their phone.
- What we store. We store the controls a parent configures (limits, bedtime and downtime schedules, category rules), plus events needed to apply and report them — for example, that a limit was reached, that a block screen was shown, or that a child requested more time.
- Parents are in control. A parent can view, change, or remove these controls at any time in the app, and removing a child or deleting the family removes the associated settings.
6. Children's privacy
Clann is designed to be set up and managed by a parent or guardian for their own family. It is not directed to children for independent sign-up, and we do not knowingly allow children to create their own accounts outside of a family a parent controls.
- A parent or guardian provides consent for, and manages, any child's participation in the family and the information associated with their device.
- We collect a child's information only to provide the family-safety features the parent has enabled (such as location sharing and screen-time controls), and we do not use it for advertising or sell it.
- A parent can review a child's information, stop collection by turning off features or removing the child, and request deletion at any time (see section 11).
7. How information is shared
We share information only in these limited ways:
- Within your family. Location, presence, and controls are shared among members of your Clann family according to each person's settings and role. That's the point of the app.
- Service providers. With the infrastructure and platform providers that help us run Clann, described in section 8. They may only process data on our behalf to provide their service.
- Legal & safety. When we reasonably believe disclosure is required by law, or is necessary to protect the safety, rights, or property of our users or others.
- Business transfer. If Clann is ever involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, information may transfer as part of that transaction; we'll require the successor to honor this policy.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertising networks or data brokers.
8. Service providers
Clann relies on a small number of trusted providers:
- Apple. Sign in with Apple (authentication), Apple Push Notification service (notifications), Family Controls / Device Activity (parental controls), and MapKit (maps). Apple's handling of this data is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
- Cloud hosting. Our servers and database run on cloud infrastructure (Railway) located in the United States, which stores and processes the data described above on our behalf.
We keep this list intentionally short and will update it here if it changes.
9. Data retention
- We keep your account and family data for as long as your account is active.
- Location history and event data are retained to power timelines and presence, and are pruned over time; turning off sharing or removing a member reduces what remains.
- Diagnostic and telemetry data is retained only for a limited period to troubleshoot and improve reliability.
- When you delete your account (or a family is deleted), we delete or de-identify the associated personal data, except where we must retain limited records to comply with legal obligations.
10. Security
We protect your information with industry-standard safeguards:
- Data is encrypted in transit using TLS between the app and our servers.
- Access to production systems and data is restricted to what's necessary to operate the service.
- On-device data is protected by your device's own security (passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID).
No method of transmission or storage is ever 100% secure, but we work to protect your family's information and to respond promptly if a problem occurs.
11. Your choices & rights
- Location. Turn sharing on or off in the app, or change location permission in iOS Settings at any time.
- Notifications. Manage or turn off notifications in iOS Settings → Notifications → Clann.
- Access & deletion. You can remove family members, and you can delete your account and associated data from within the app or by contacting us.
- Regional rights. Depending on where you live (for example, under U.S. state privacy laws or the GDPR), you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict the use of your personal information. We honor these rights — contact us to make a request, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising them.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as the app evolves. When we do, we'll revise the "Last updated" date above, and for significant changes we'll provide additional notice in the app. Your continued use of Clann after an update means you accept the revised policy.
